Optimising life and inhabiting life

August 30, 2026 Fateme Banishoeib

We have become extraordinarily good at optimising life while becoming strangely poor at inhabiting it.

We optimise productivity.

Attention.

Health.

Careers.

Relationships.

Learning.

Businesses.

Even creativity.

And increasingly, AI can optimise the production of almost anything.

What is all this optimisation in service of?

I feel that in our obsession for performance, we may have forgotten aliveness along the way.

Not merely being alive biologically, but the capacity to feel, perceive, desire, create, wonder, suffer, choose, connect and participate in one's own existence.

Much of our modern lives are organised and even optimised precisely in ways that anaesthetise aliveness.

Speed does it.

Overwork does it.

Endless consumption does it.

Algorithms do it.

Bureaucracy does it.

Performance culture does it.

Even some forms of personal development do it when they turn being human into another optimisation project.

And AI may accelerate this enormously.

My inquiry is: “How do we create conditions in which human beings can remain fully alive and allow that aliveness to become contribution?”

We don't have a mature language for human contribution that doesn't require self-erasure.

For centuries, contribution has often been framed as: produce → perform → achieve → compete → prove → matter.

What if contribution could instead emerge from: attention → perception → experience → expression → relationship → meaning.

Then something changes: pain isn't merely an obstacle to overcome.

Difference isn't a defect to manage.

Creativity isn't a skill to acquire.

Life isn't raw material for a personal brand.

Perhaps the opportunity isn't to invent another concept but become so alive to discover the concept that is already trying to emerge through life while we are busy optimising it.

What would the world look like if human aliveness were treated as existential rather than a luxury?

I have explored in BEFORE IT BECOMES MEDICINE WHAT ALLOWS SOMETHING TO COME ALIVE. IT IS NOW AVAILABLE here.
