A molecule can spend its entire existence full of promise and never become a medicine.
Not because it wasn't extraordinary.
Not because the science was wrong.
But because discovery is only the beginning.
A molecule must survive formulation, testing, manufacturing, regulation, uncertainty and countless decisions before it reaches the person it was always capable of helping.
People, like me, who work in pharmaceuticals, know this is simply a fact of life.
Potential alone is never enough.
I have been carrying this lesson far beyond the laboratory.
How many ideas remain molecules?
How many organisations are full of intelligence they never learn to access?
How many people spend years believing something is wrong with them, when what is missing are the conditions in which they can emerge?
We speak endlessly about potential.
We encourage people to unlock it, maximise it, realise it.
But perhaps we ask the wrong question.
Potential does not become contribution by determination alone.
It requires conditions.
A seed cannot negotiate with concrete.
A poem cannot exist if every sentence must justify itself before it is written.
A question cannot mature if certainty is rewarded too quickly.
And a human being cannot fully contribute where only fragments of them are welcome.
The older I become, the less interested I am in teaching people how to become more.
I am becoming more interested in understanding what prevents what is already alive from finding its form.
Leadership is not about producing better people. It is about creating better conditions.
Creativity is not a gift reserved for artists. It is our capacity to perceive possibilities that others overlook.
Inclusion is not simply about who is invited into the room. It is about whether the room allows something previously impossible to emerge.
The scientist in me still reaches for the microscope.
The poet in me still reaches for language.
For a long time I believed these belonged to different worlds.
I suspect they are practising the same discipline. Attention!
The poem and the microscope. Both to look closer. To look again.
Both remind me that reality is rarely exhausted by its first appearance.
Our culture prizes speed, celebrates faster answers, faster technologies, faster decisions.
Artificial intelligence has accelerated that rhythm even further.
Yet I wonder whether one of the most valuable human capacities in the years ahead will not be speed, but attention.
The willingness to remain with a question a little longer.
To notice what everyone else has learned to ignore.
To resist replacing judgement with immediacy.
To create conditions before demanding outcomes.
I have spent the past months writing around these questions.
Not because I have reached conclusions. Because the questions refused to leave me alone.
They have led me to the origins… my origins, my past and future.
To the not yet visible, yet always there. Maybe not ready but there. Not yet recognised. Not because it lacks value, but because it is still waiting for the conditions that allow it to become… Before it becomes medicine.
