There are several layers inside it.
Berries judged by AI → outsourcing sensory judgment
AI writing love letters → outsourcing emotional articulation
AI writing grief → outsourcing existential processing
They correspond to three fundamental human capacities:
Perception — tasting, sensing, judging ripeness
Expression — translating feeling into language
Meaning-making — metabolizing loss and experience
When these move outside us, something subtle shifts.
The problem is not convenience. We have always used tools to reduce labor. Mills replaced grinding grain by hand. Calculators replaced mental arithmetic. Washing machines replaced hours of scrubbing.
But when we outsource the labor that philosophers sometimes call formative labor, the work that forms the person doing it, we lose part of our self.
Learning to taste ripeness trains attention.
Writing a love letter forces us to confront what we feel.
Writing grief is how grief becomes part of us rather than something that consumes us.
When we outsource those, we don’t just save time, we bypass the friction through which identity forms.
The modern technological promise has always been: remove friction → increase efficiency.
But the paradox is that selfhood requires friction.
Without it, experience becomes consumption rather than transformation.
The real question is not about AI at all. It’s about which kinds of work are merely instrumental and which kinds are existential.
Instrumental work can be automated without much loss.
Existential work cannot be outsourced without hollowing something in us.
Ordering berries online is fine.
Letting something else decide what ripeness tastes like to you slowly erodes a sensory relationship with the world.
Using AI to help edit a letter might be harmless.
Never struggling to say what you feel might mean you never fully learn what you feel.
The danger is not technological takeover.
The danger is voluntary abdication of formative effort.
And if we zoom out culturally: industrial society automated physical labor. Digital society is starting to automate cognitive labor.
Generative systems risk automating existential labor. The last one is where identity lives.
The real cultural question becomes: “Which parts of being human should remain deliberately inefficient?”
Cooking.
Writing.
Listening.
Making art.
Mourning.
Falling in love.
Not because we cannot automate them.
But because they are the places where a self is slowly forged.
What we're abandoning isn't inefficiency. It's the work of forging a self. And perhaps the future wisdom will not be refusing tools.
It will be learning where to refuse convenience.
Some frictions are not problems.
They are the workshop of becoming.
