The longest route is the shortcut.
Some things cannot be rushed without being lost.
Too often we shortcut learning and miss understanding.
Sometimes, the only way to save time is to stop trying to save time.
What if the longest route is not the scenic detour, the unnecessary complication, or the price we pay for doing things the hard way?
What if it is the route that takes us all the way to the root?
The long way through. Not around.
The route that changes not only where we arrive, but who arrives.
The longest route is the shortcut.
We have confused efficiency with quality (quality of being and doing). We optimise processes, compress timelines, eliminate friction.
We can do the wrong thing efficiently.
We can produce something mediocre at extraordinary speed.
We can optimise a process until it becomes excellent at producing exactly what should never have been produced in the first place.
We have made speed measurable, while quality often requires judgement. We can count the minutes saved, but how do we account for the understanding never developed, the question never asked, the detail never noticed, the trust never built?
The real cost of efficiency is not what we leave out of the process, but what we leave out of ourselves.
The longest route is not necessarily the slowest one.
It is the route that takes the time required to understand what we are doing, why we are doing it, and what our actions will make possible, or impossible.
Sometimes, taking longer is wasteful. Sometimes, taking less time is wasteful.
The question is not how quickly we can get there. But what we are willing to sacrifice to arrive sooner.
What if the time we are trying to save is precisely the time quality needs?
