There is no way to Inclusion. Inclusion is the way.
Underneath questions of inequality, injustice, exclusion there is the question of power.
But what is power? To me is dynamic and relational rather than absolute.
We can exercise different expressions of power (simultaneously). Power isn’t always visible, the most insidious is the invisible power that shapes ideologies, psychology and behaviours.
Power shapes our sense of place in the world, what is normal and hence accepted (giving an illusion of inclusion) or what isn’t and hence excluded.
The empowerment movements are not necessarily inclusion movements.
Let’s do some re-framing of power and empowerment. Journal, create some art inspired by these inquiries:
How have I contributed with my personal power to take away power from someone else?
What idea of power do I need to let go?
How can I enable a more inclusive dialogue around power?
It is important we deepen our understanding of how identity, power, subordination and exclusion affect ourselves, our organisations and the initiatives we advocate for.
It’s going to take radical honesty to navigate the complex intricacies of our addiction to power. Addicted to power, craving it as a measurement of our success, survival, safety, we have sacrificed feelings, emotions, creativity, imagination to its altar. A power placed out there, in roles and status. In its worship we have designed models (including business and society models) whose only aim is to get and control power.
My poetic exploration, an excerpt from The Whisper:
"... The illusion of controlling the world
In the frustration of not being able to control ourselves
The craving for power we do not have
So we abuse
Neglecting is violence too
Neglecting our responsibility to say no
Neglecting the care we owe to the world
To ourselves
Turning our back
Numbing down ..."
What forms of power have you experienced and practiced? Have they been an expression of Inclusion? Let me know, I’d love to hear from you.
