Beyond your limits

March 15, 2025 Fateme Banishoeib

To go beyond is as wrong as to fall short. Confucious

We have passed the limit!

The so called mantra of going “beyond your limits” of “limitless” mentality often fuels burnout, environmental degradation, and a relentless pursuit of more, without regard for the consequences.

We’re not made to be limitless.

We’re made to listen.

To move with care.

To know when enough is enough.

I am not saying we should stay stuck in our self-limiting and scarce mentality. Encouraging someone to overcome self-limiting beliefs is about growth, healing, and expanding one’s potential within (emphasis on within) the realities of life. It is about respecting boundaries while fostering evolution.

Not beyond.

But within.

Instead, glorifying the idea of pushing “beyond limits” as if limits don’t exist is a denial of our natural constraints at all levels: physical, emotional, ecological.

There’s a huge difference between pushing oneself to grow and striving for something inherently unsustainable or destructive. One nurtures life, and the other disregards it.

There is a sufficiency in the world for man's need but not for man's greed. Gandhi

Limits are not the enemy.

They’re the guardians of life.

Learn to live with them.

Not against them.

Social media culture, with its relentless pursuit of “beyond limits” achievements, encourages self-promotion and validation-seeking, both key components of narcissism (Buffardi & Campbell, 2008). Constantly aiming to surpass every boundary can fuel perfectionism, which is linked to narcissistic grandiosity. Narcissists often struggle with accepting limitations, whether personal or external. Embracing a “beyond limits” mentality feeds into this inability to recognize or respect boundaries, fostering unrealistic self-perceptions (Morf & Rhodewalt, 2001).
