We want a bigger car.
We want a summer home.
We want the latest tech gadget.
We want…
And, we find ourselves adrift in a sea of wants, constantly urged to buy, acquire, and accumulate. We are told that happiness lies just one purchase away, that fulfillment can be found in the latest gadget or the trendiest outfit. Yet, despite our bulging closets and overstuffed homes, a gnawing emptiness persists. Could it be that, in our frantic pursuit of material satisfaction, we have lost touch with something far more profound?
Could it be we have lost touch with our true desires?
Consumerism thrives on a simple yet insidious principle: the endless creation of wants. Advertisements bombard us with messages that our lives are incomplete, that we are lacking, and that the solution to our discontent can be found on a store shelf. We are conditioned to equate possession with happiness, to believe that the next purchase will finally fill the void within.
This relentless pursuit of more leaves us disconnected from our true desires, those deep-seated aspirations that connect us with our highest potential.
Desire connects us to the Stars.
Desire is not the same as wanting. Desire is what ignites our passion and propels us toward our dreams. It is a profound, intrinsic force that goes beyond the superficial cravings of consumerism. True desire is about longing for something meaningful, something that resonates with our soul and gives our life purpose.
Yet, in a society obsessed with material wealth, we often feel unworthy or guilty for our desires. We are taught to suppress our deeper yearnings in favor of the next trendy item, to feel shame for aspiring to something greater than what can be bought. This sense of unworthiness alienates us from our true selves, making us feel unworthy of the stars we once dreamed of.
That promotion you want, is a desire or another wanting for prestige and status?
When we substitute our true desires with consumerist wants, we create a void within ourselves. This void cannot be filled with more stuff; it demands something more substantial, something authentic. The more we ignore our true desires, the deeper this void becomes, leading to a pervasive sense of dissatisfaction and unfulfillment.
To break free from this cycle, we must reclaim our authentic desires. This requires introspection and the courage to let go of the incessant pull of consumerism. We must ask ourselves what truly matters, what we genuinely aspire to achieve and experience in our lives. It is only by reconnecting with our true desires that we can fill the void within and find lasting fulfillment.
