From thought provoking to emotions evoking

February 11, 2024 Fateme Banishoeib

Often people refer to my writings as “thought provoking”. Of course I am grateful for their reading and stopping to think about something in a different way.

Provoke people to cross the bridges so that they can see the other side! ― Mehmet Murat ildan

I am a provocateur, a rebel and of course I love it. And, in all honesty I have had enough of provoking more thinking. I am here to evoke emotions!

The expression "thought-provoking" traces its roots back to the mid-19th century, where it emerged as a way to describe something that stimulates deep contemplation or introspection. Some refer to earlier evidence of its use from 1791 in the writing of "Irishman".

It implies that someone or something encourages to engage in critical thinking, questioning assumptions, and exploring new ideas.

However, merely provoking thought may not always be sufficient for effecting meaningful change. In today's world, where information overload is rampant, I have a desire to go beyond stimulating more thoughts and instead evoke emotions that can catalyze shifts in our collective thinking and behaviors.

While thought-provoking content may engage the intellect, emotionally resonant experiences have the power to connect on a deeper level, prompting action and inspiring change. Care cannot exist if we can’t resonate (It may be pity, bypassing, fixing but not care).

To resonate truly means “to make a prolonged or echoing sound” which is physical and emotional.

That’s why art is essential.

That’s why when we ask about the ROI of art we are failing our essential need to be in-resonance.

That’s why every time we ask for the business case for art we are actually out of resonance with our own heART.

That’s why what we do is not echoing what the world needs - because we are out of resonance.

While thought-provoking content remains valuable for sparking initial reflection, the true power lies in evoking emotions that may support transformative shifts in mindset and behavior. I invite you to practice the art of being in resonance so your doing may resonate with your being. I invite you to shift from thought provoking to evoking emotions. "Her promise to us, if we will not thwart it, is that she will cause us to live. She will cause us to live fully alive, responsively and consistently so." Clarissa Pinkola
