The art of...

Have you ever used expressions like: "The art of___" or "It’s an art!" I am sure we all have. Typically these are expressions used to refer to a particular skill or mastery of a skill. Even though there is the word art in the expression, it feels to me, they have little to do with art.

Let me ask you, if you have used such expressions, have you actually picked up a paintbrush, a musical instrument, a camera... to practice art? How many of you (despite the reference to art) continue to consider the arts as a frivolous hobby and not a serious “business”?

Art, or as I call it heart, is not a skill, a process or a tool for entertainment. It is the very essence at the centre of our being that when evoked and practiced helps us create new paradigms.

We become creators when we start creating (thinking about creating isn’t creating!). Practicing art offers us the opportunity to pay attention, to notice forms, rhythms, nuances which otherwise pass unnoticed. It is within the practice that our awareness expands. It is the practice of our voice that leads to true expression. It is the practice that leads to the embodiment of the skill (not the cognitive understanding of it).

I dream of a space, a studio, for all of us to be in practice together. No teachers. No assessments. No assignments. Only collective art practices. A studio were we are all students. A studio where we listen to art. A studio where the artist is valued as we value the doctor, the engineer, the teacher. A studio where we can learn about how the world works by practicing art.

Come to the Studio where we practice “The art of being art” the serious business of our hearts.
